Look to Our Founding Fathers for Direction
Friends-
As July 4th approaches, we should look to our Founding Fathers for guidance on how to lead our country out of its current challenges.
 James Madison said,
“An elective despotism was not the government we fought for, but one in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among the several bodies of magistry  as that no one could transcend their legal limits without being effectively checked and restrained  by the others.”
Separation of powers is of little use when an authoritarian party controls all three branches of Government. Having three wolves guard the hen house does not make life any safer for the hens.  Three wolves make the hen house an uncertain living hell where there are no checks or balances.
Fortunately, we are not hens. We are thinking men and women. We can read Madison’s words and take action. We can engage in non-violent mass protests. We can file numerous lawsuits.
We can speak out and be as uncooperative as possible with those who would rob us of our liberty. We can rely on the free press to report the truth vigorously. In the words of the late Congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis, we can engage in non-violent protest and  “ Make Good Trouble”.
Above all, we can keep our heads and think. We Can,
 “ Make America Think Again”.
We can provide hope, and most importantly, we can conceive a path to safety.  We can reestablish a meaningful separation of powers to counter the authoritarianism that grips us. We can save America from itself.
This we can and this we must do.
