As lawyers, we all took an oath to support the Constitution
Our duty to support the Constitution has always been paramount.
In 2010, I organized the first HCCLA Reading of the Declaration of Independence
In 2010, our Reading of the Declaration was in protest against those judges who routinely violated the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
In 2010, in protesting against those abusive judges, we honored our oath as lawyers to support the Constitution.
Since 2010, our local judiciary has improved in many ways.
But now We live in a new era, with new threats to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The Trump Regime daily attacks the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
The Trump Regime’s Deportation policy is purposely cruel and clearly intended to frighten all of us into compliance
On the nightly news, we see undocumented workers beaten and arrested by Trump’s ICE Goons.
These undocumented workers are treated in an inhumane fashion by ICE
Their 14th Amendment rights are routinely denied
These undocumented workers are deported to Venezuela and other foreign countries with no Due process of law.
The Trump Regime daily tramples the 14th Amendment.
As a lawyer, My duty to support the Constitution remains paramount.
Today, as I read the Declaration of Independence, I do so in defiant protest against the Trump regime & its grotesque abuse of undocumented workers.
I read the Declaration in protest against all that the Trump regime does that is in direct violation of our Constitution and our Bill of Rights.
General Mark Milley, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, aptly described his oath to the Constitution.
General Milley said,
“We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen,
or to a tyrant or dictator,
and we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator.
We don’t take an oath to an individual.
We take an oath to the Constitution,
and we take an oath to the idea that is America
and we’re willing to die to protect it.”
This year, I hope other Lawyers will join me in reading the Declaration as a loud protest against this wannabe dictator and his unconstitutional policies and actions.
God Bless America
